Hi folks, today I wanted to talk to you about a very cool product called VIMA (VMware Infrastructure Management Assistant). This is a virtual appliance that runs on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform that allows you to manage all your virtual environment. It is especially useful with ESXi.
VIMA includes the VI Perl Toolkit and the Remote CLI so you can manage your VMs. I regularly use VIMA as a launching point for a variety of scripts. VMware has done a great job by releasing this virtual appliance. The best part about it? It's free!
To install VIMA click on File, then Virtual Appliance, then import. Then select Import from URL and enter the following URL: http://www.vmware.com/go/importvima/vima1.ovf.
This will import the virtual machine directly into your ESXi server and you'll be good to go. When you start up VIMA for the first time you will have to setup the network settings and the password.
The first thing you will notice is that there is no use of the root account. Instead you login as vi-admin and then sudo to perform any root related tasks. In some future blog posts I will show you how to leverage VIMA and existing scripts out there to make your management of your virtual environment a breeze.
